Pokemon Go is the latest game sweeping the nation. While the game is fun for many people, it took a dangerous turn for one Forest Grove man who said he was stabbed while playing the game.
Michael Baker was determined to catch all the Pokemon he could get around 1 a.m. Monday morning. It’s been the 21-year-old’s dream to play his childhood game in real life.
“Its been too long, too long. Gotta be the first one to catch them all,” said Baker.
When the game Pokemon Go came out, Baker was set on being the best.
“I basically risked my life,” Baker said.
The game uses GPS, which means players have to get up and get moving to play. When a player sees a Pokemon, they capture it. The game also allows people to challenge each other.
Early Monday morning, Baker was walking near 19th and Filbert in Forest Grove, Oregon, to catch as many Pokemon as possible when he saw another man, possibly playing the same game.
“I saw him go by and asked if he was playing Pokemon Go. He was like ‘what?’ I guess he wanted to battle because he came up at me with a knife,” said Baker.
Baker said he didn’t go to the hospital because he still wanted to hunt for Pokemon and other things.
“Right after I was stabbed, I continued my mission to Plaid Pantry for my mission for chips and beer,” said Baker.
Other Pokemon Go players said they’ve seen news stories around the game. One person in Wyoming stumbled upon a body while playing, and police in Missouri said a group used the game to rob people.
“That’s crazy, it’s just a game but people are going to get killed for it because people are obsessed and want to be the best,” said Brennen Young.
As for Baker, he said he’ll be careful next time but will continue his mission to be the best.
“No, it’s important to me. I gotta basically catch them all,” said Baker.
Baker said he got eight stitches on his shoulder.
Police have not made any arrest, and right now said they can’t release any information about the suspect.
