Police are investigating after a deadly shooting erupted as a “Love Thy Neighbor” event wrapped up in Brighton, Alabama, Saturday night.
Officers responded to a call of multiple people shot around 7:30 p.m. in an area between Jaybird Road and Smith Street near 7th Avenue. One person was killed and three others were injured, Birmingham police said, The extent of the victims’ injuries is unknown at this time.
Bill Veitch, the District Attorney of Jefferson County’s Bessemer division, said there were multiple shooters involved in the incident. Veitch said two people are being questioned by Brighton police, though he would not confirm whether they are suspects. He also said the investigation at the scene is expected to last well into the night.
No arrests have been made.
A local minister, Isaac Bruister, told ABC 33/40’s Andrew Donley he saw one child suffering from a gunshot wound, though police haven’t confirmed the ages of the victims. An emotional Bruister became visibly upset when describing the senseless shooting that he says left a little girl crying “My daddy’s dead.”
“The day is called ‘Love Thy Neighbor. It’s not called ‘kill thy neighbor,'” said Bruister, the associate minister at Friendship Baptist Church in Brighton. “Any time a human being can shoot into a crowd where babies, mothers, fathers are at, that’s a demonic being. That’s not a human being. He’s used by Satan.”
Bruister, who admitted to committing similar acts earlier in his life before turning to religion, said the shooters should surrender.
“There’s only two places for that person: They’re going to end up in the jailhouse or the cemetery right across the street,” Bruister said. “I was once that person, shooting in this neighborhood, me. If Jesus can save me, he can save them. If you know what you did, you know who you are, ain’t no sense in running; just go ahead and turn yourself in, and deal with the consequences.”
